8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction,
and don’t reject your mother’s teaching,
9 for they will be a garland of grace on your head
and a gold chain around your neck.
Parents are tasked with bringing up their children in the teaching of the ways of God (Dt 6:4-9, et al). Life’s experiences can be passed on to the next generation, allowing them to avoid the mistakes of the previous one, but only if the new generation is willing to listen and learn.
Experience really isn’t the best teacher. It just leaves the most memorable (and often painful) memories.
